Grade Age Guide
Upon enrolment, students are placed in a grade or section based on their: chronological age, academic evaluations and assessments, past school records, student interview results, and teacher recommendations.
The age cut-off date at BIBS for grade placement is 31 October. Students with birthdays prior to 31 October will usually be grouped with students who have summer birthdays. Students whose birthday falls after 31 October will usually be grouped with students who will be a year younger at the semester’s start. For example: A child who turns six on 15 September, will most likely be placed in Grade 1 – while a child who turns six on 12 December will most likely be placed in Kindergarten.
In some cases, students may be considered for placement ahead of students of the same age if they have previously begun a grade level ahead. After a period of teacher assessment, this placement will be reviewed to ensure that the student has been placed correctly. Social development and academic progress are equal factors in placement assessment. Grade placement is the decision of the school Principal and although parent requests will be considered, the school reserves the right to make the final decision. When placing students in classes, BIBS endeavors to create a balance in terms of academic ability, gender, and nationality – as well as taking into account friendship groups and individual student needs.
